In case anyone needs to configure a smarthost for sendmail in debian and doesn't want to read the helpfile, a la me, here is the quick and dirty way to do it.
$ cd /etc/mail
$ nano sendmail.mc
add line
define(`SMART_HOST',`[mail.forward.com]')dnl
recompile sendmail.cf
$ m4 sendmail.mc > sendmail.cf
restart sendmail
$ /etc/init.d/sendmail restart
add mail.forward.com to hosts file
$ nano /etc/hosts
111.233.121.12 mail.forward.com
restart networking
$ /etc/intit.d/networking restart
Hopefully this will save all you lazy folks a couple hours.
